History

The lagoon developed beside the Svartsengi geothermal power plant, where local people began bathing in the warm reservoir in the early 1980s. The company was established in 1992 and the modern spa opened in 1999, with later development including the Retreat in 2018. This is a managed geothermal bathing destination, not an untouched medieval natural hot spring.

Why Visit

Choose Blue Lagoon when you want time in its distinctive silica-rich water and lava-field setting, with facilities organised around a bathing visit. It can suit a half-day excursion from the capital or an airport-area plan with a generous buffer. It is less suitable as a rushed stop squeezed between inflexible connections, especially while access conditions can change.

Tickets & Entry Options

Choose the named Premium admission only if its included extras suit your visit. A transfer-only ticket is not a cheaper admission package, and Retreat experiences are different products. Confirm your timed arrival and party details before payment. Read the current operating and access notice separately from ticket availability: an available booking calendar is not a guarantee against road or safety-related changes.

Ticket Price

Use the final dated Ticketory total for your selected time and visitor categories. Add both outward and return transport when comparing the cost with another spa day. The included drink is one drink, not an unlimited bar allowance; further refreshments and meals need a separate budget. Check the booking’s current change or closure terms rather than assuming every weather or access disruption has identical handling.

Opening Hours

The official seasonal schedule lists 21 August–31 December 08:00–22:00, with guests leaving the water thirty minutes before closing. Christmas Eve is listed 08:00–16:00 and New Year’s Eve 08:00–18:00. Your booked arrival and any current operational notice govern the visit. Recheck special dates, seismic updates and access restrictions rather than relying solely on these general hours.

How to Get There

The spa is at Norðurljósavegur 9 near Grindavík, outside Reykjavík. The current official access guidance uses Grindavíkurvegur, road 43, and asks drivers to follow posted signs rather than old navigation routes. Paid coach connections serve Reykjavík and Keflavík, but this admission does not include them. Allow about five minutes on the maintained path from parking, with extra time for conditions.

Highlights

The milky-blue water against dark lava, bathing areas, masks and sauna or steam facilities form the main experience. Enjoy the setting without assuming that a 2012 photograph represents today’s exact layout or access arrangements. Follow staff directions around facilities and respect any restricted areas. The Premium ticket does not provide a separate luxury Retreat Spa experience.

Tips

Shower before bathing, bring swimwear and respect privacy in changing areas. Keep valuables and jewellery secure, drink water and avoid turning the visit into an uninterrupted photography session. Never walk on protective barriers or enter restricted ground. Follow staff and authorities if air quality, weather or access conditions change, and confirm particular accessibility needs before booking transport.

Average Time

Our planning allowance is two to three hours at the lagoon plus transport, making roughly a half-day from Reykjavík. Add more if having a separately purchased meal. Leave a generous flight buffer when combining the visit with Keflavík airport: a convenient map position does not protect you from road, weather or operational disruption.

Winter Tips

Bring a windproof coat and shoes with grip for the parking approach, and check road, weather and seismic notices again the same morning. Warm water does not make exposed paths or your head immune to cold wind. Choose daylight if seeing the lava landscape matters, leave the pool before the cutoff and never treat northern lights as an included or guaranteed sighting.

Blue Lagoon admission questions

How should I compare Blue Lagoon entry fees?

Use the final price shown for your selected date, arrival time and visitor category. Add outward and return travel, meals and any further drinks when comparing the total. The Premium admission described here includes one drink; check the selected ticket’s change or closure terms before paying.

What is included in Blue Lagoon Premium admission?

The selected Premium admission lists lagoon entry, sauna and steam facilities, one drink, a silica mask plus two additional masks, a take-home mask, towel, bathrobe and private locker. Transport, meals, massage and Retreat Spa access are excluded. A private locker does not mean you have a private changing room.

Can I visit Blue Lagoon before a flight from Keflavík?

Allow two to three hours at the spa plus separate transport, and leave a generous flight buffer. Admission does not include coach connections from Reykjavík or Keflavík. Check official seismic, road and operating notices on your travel day; proximity to the airport cannot prevent weather, road or operational disruption.

Practical details can change. Check your selected Ticketory booking for current prices, opening arrangements, accessibility and entry instructions. Suggested timings and routes are our planning advice, not a guaranteed schedule.
