History

Founded in 1853, the Academy began with scientific fieldwork and collections that gradually became a public museum. The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed its home and most of its specimens, while material gathered by a Galápagos expedition helped rebuild the collections. It moved to Golden Gate Park in 1916, adding the Steinhart Aquarium in 1923 and Morrison Planetarium in 1952.

After damage from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the institution reconsidered how its many activities could share a building. Renzo Piano’s replacement opened on 27 September 2008, bringing major public exhibits and research functions beneath a planted roof. That combination of scientific work, living habitats and architecture remains central to the experience today.

Why Visit

The appeal is the change of scale. A butterfly in the rainforest, fish moving through a reef and a planetarium journey offer very different ways to think about the natural world. You can follow your interests without making separate journeys across the city, which is useful for families whose attention and energy change during the day.

The building also makes an interesting stop for architecture enthusiasts. Its roof is habitat as well as infrastructure, supporting native plants and wildlife while helping regulate conditions inside. The roof’s weather monitoring and skylights connect its appearance with the practical demands of a museum containing a tropical environment. Leave time to notice the building itself rather than treating the exhibits as a checklist.

Tickets & Entry Options

The Ticketory daytime entry ticket covers Academy admission, shows and exhibitions, and the included daily programme. It is a self-guided visit: a private guide, transport and refreshments are not listed inclusions. Check the selected date, age categories and terms before completing a booking, then keep the issued ticket available for scanning at the museum.

Planetarium admission still needs a separate free show reservation after arrival. Use the lobby QR code or ask staff for assistance; a museum ticket does not guarantee a place at your preferred showtime. Security and exhibit queues can also remain. Thursday NightLife is a separate adults-only event, so do not treat a daytime ticket as evening admission.

Ticket Price

Use Ticketory’s booking page for the total payable for your chosen date and party. No live Ticketory price is quoted here. As a separate budgeting reference, the Academy’s published daytime admission on 15 October 2026 is US$49 for adults aged 19 and above, rising to US$55 on peak dates; youth aged 13–18 are US$45 or US$49, and children aged 3–12 are US$39 or US$45. Children aged two and under are free under the Academy’s published policy.

These direct-admission reference prices are not a promise about a reseller’s checkout total. Budget separately for travel, parking, food and any optional extras. For families, calculate the whole party’s cost before choosing a date; the official peak periods include certain November and December holiday dates.

Opening Hours

The standard public schedule checked on 15 October 2026 is Monday–Saturday 09:30–17:00 and Sunday 11:00–17:00, with last museum admission at 16:00. The Academy is closed on 21 October 2026 for a private event and closes at 15:00 on 24 October 2026.

The rainforest normally starts at 10:00 Monday–Saturday and 11:00 Sunday, with last entry at 16:30. Planetarium times vary through the day. Plan around the earliest closing activity you want to experience, and recheck the date-specific calendar before travelling: reaching the building before last entry is not enough for a full visit.

How to Get There

The address is 55 Music Concourse Drive, inside Golden Gate Park. Muni’s 44 O’Shaughnessy stops directly outside northbound, or across at the de Young Museum southbound. The 5 Fulton stops at Fulton Street and 8th Avenue, with approximately five minutes’ walking; the 7 Haight stops at Lincoln Way and 9th Avenue, approximately seven minutes away. N Judah serves 9th Avenue and Irving Street, around ten minutes on foot.

Drivers should plan for the Music Concourse garage and current access restrictions. JFK Drive is closed to cars; the Academy lists garage access from Fulton Street/10th Avenue or Music Concourse Drive/MLK Drive. Allow time to reach the entrance after parking rather than using your arrival at the park as your admission time. Confirm the route for the day if an event affects nearby streets.

Highlights

Steinhart Aquarium is worth a slow circuit. The Philippine Coral Reef, California Coast habitats and deeper-water exhibits show different environments, while the African penguin colony provides a different kind of observation. Look at the habitat and behaviour as well as searching for a particular animal; wildlife viewing changes throughout the day.

Osher Rainforest rises through a four-storey glass dome with free-flying birds and butterflies. The journey continues down by lift to views of the flooded forest, making it more than a quick walk past planted displays. The environment is warm and humid, so keep an outer layer easy to remove.

Morrison Planetarium offers an immersive seated break under its large dome, with the programme changing over time. Choose the actual show after checking its suitability: children under four cannot enter, and the Academy cautions that some shows may not suit children under seven. Round out the visit with natural history displays and the Living Roof if accessible during your visit.

Tips

Reserve a planetarium time soon after arrival, then work the rest of your route around it. Keep enough margin to reach the theatre before the show begins. With children too young for the dome, spend that time in the aquarium or another suitable exhibit instead of making the show the centrepiece of the day.

For accessibility needs, the Academy provides wheelchair-accessible entry and alternative routes to exhibits, including the rainforest and planetarium. Ask about reserved seating and the most comfortable route. Sensory kits are available to borrow in the lobby, subject to availability. Visitors sensitive to noise or changing light may prefer a shorter, carefully chosen circuit, with breaks between different environments.

Staff can explain same-day re-entry arrangements if you need a break in the park; get the required hand stamp before leaving. Wear comfortable shoes, follow photography signs and give animals space. Contact the Academy before visiting with a service animal because some habitats have specific restrictions.

Average Time

Allow roughly three to four hours as a practical planning estimate, including a show and a relaxed circuit of the main areas. This is not a timed tour duration or a requirement to stay that long. A short visit can concentrate on the aquarium and one other priority; a family day with food, breaks and detailed reading can easily need longer.

Avoid booking an immediately following appointment across San Francisco. Your preferred planetarium slot, a rainforest queue or a child’s need for a break can change the pace. If you combine the Academy with another Golden Gate Park attraction, leave the second stop flexible and check its own admission arrangements separately.

Winter Tips

Use the Academy as the indoor anchor for a winter park day and keep the outdoor walk dependent on the forecast. A waterproof outer layer and footwear comfortable on wet paths are useful, but wear removable layers beneath them: the rainforest remains much warmer than the journey through the park.

Holiday dates can have higher admission prices and busy show reservations. Start early enough to use your available hours, check seasonal closures and avoid relying on a last-hour planetarium place. If quieter conditions matter more than seeing every exhibit, consider a shorter afternoon visit: the Academy identifies the final one or two hours as often quieter in autumn and winter. Balance that choice against the rainforest’s earlier entry cutoff.
