A short history of Cologne Cathedral
Construction began in 1248, shaped by the cathedral’s role as the home of the Shrine of the Three Kings. Work continued in stages before stopping for centuries; the medieval plan was taken up again in the nineteenth century, and the cathedral was completed in 1880.
The building survived the destruction of the Second World War but required extensive repair, and conservation remains continuous. Its long construction history is visible in the relationship between medieval design, nineteenth-century completion and later restoration.
Why visit Cologne Cathedral?
An exterior-led tour is useful because the façade is too large and detailed to read at a glance. A guide can help you connect the portals, towers and changing city around the building. The VR option adds a visual reconstruction, while the old-town walk places the cathedral within Cologne’s streets and brewing culture.
Our recommendation is to use the tour as orientation, not as a substitute for every cathedral experience. If you also want silent time inside, arrange that separately and leave a generous gap. If you prefer food and social history, the old-town option may fit better; if architectural change interests you, the VR experience is the clearer match.
Tickets and entry options
The guided VR experience includes a live guide, an exterior-only tour and VR glasses. It excludes a guided visit inside the cathedral. The old-town option includes a guided walk through central Cologne and one Kölsch beer or soft drink in a brewery; it also excludes an interior cathedral tour.
Neither product should be described as cathedral admission. Since 1 July 2026, tourist visits inside require a separate cathedral ticket. Check the supplier’s exact meeting point, language, age rules and duration before paying, then decide independently whether to add interior, tower or Treasury access.
| Option | Includes | Know before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Cathedral guided VR experience (opens in a new tab) | Live guide, exterior-only cathedral tour and VR glasses | No guided interior visit; confirm language, meeting point and VR suitability. |
| Old town tour with Kölsch tasting (opens in a new tab) | Guided old-town walk and one Kölsch or soft drink in a brewery | Cathedral interior tour excluded; alcohol is not appropriate for every visitor. |
Ticket prices and what to compare
Checked on 13 October 2026, the official cathedral-interior ticket is €12 standard and €6 reduced; eligible children aged 13 and under and specified visitors receive a free ticket. These amounts are references for separate interior admission, not the prices of the two Ticketory experiences.
Compare the final price for your chosen tour date and party size. If you also want to enter the cathedral, budget for a separate interior ticket; tower and Treasury visits are separate again. Do not buy an interior ticket merely to attend a service or pray—the cathedral provides a distinct free-access arrangement for those purposes.
Opening hours
Tourist interior visits are generally Monday–Saturday 10:00–17:45, with last admission at 17:30, and Sundays and church holidays 13:30–16:30, with last admission at 16:15. Services, special events and construction can change access at short notice. Your guided exterior experience has its own confirmed departure time.
The building is generally open 06:00–20:00 for its religious role, but that broader window is not the tourist sightseeing schedule. The tower usually operates 09:00–18:00 from March through October and 09:00–16:00 from November through February, with last admission 30 minutes before closing.
How to get there
Cologne Cathedral stands beside Köln Hauptbahnhof, making the main railway station the simplest landmark for arrival. Confirm the tour meeting point rather than assuming that any cathedral entrance is correct. The central ticket office for separate interior, tower and Treasury tickets is at Roncalliplatz 2.
Arrive early enough to orient yourself around the station, cathedral squares and portals. If you add an interior visit, use the main portal for pre-purchased tourist tickets and follow current signage. Prayer access uses a different North Transept entrance facing the station.
Highlights to look for
Outside, step back far enough to see how the twin towers, portals and buttresses work as one composition. A VR reconstruction can help separate different building phases; on the old-town tour, notice how the immense façade changes the scale of the nearby streets.
If you add a separate interior visit, look upward at the vertical structure and stained glass before moving toward individual works. The Shrine of the Three Kings explains the cathedral’s importance as a pilgrimage destination. Treat the south tower as another separate experience: its platform is reached by 533 steps and there is no lift.
Practical tips before you go
Bring only a small bag: the stated maximum is 40 × 35 × 15 cm, and large luggage cannot be stored at the cathedral. Be prepared for identity checks. Inside, private photography is allowed under the visitor rules, but flash, selfie sticks, food, drink and telephone or video calls are prohibited.
This remains an active place of worship. Keep voices low, follow staff instructions and check the service calendar if your plans depend on a particular interior time. For the brewery option, select the soft-drink alternative when appropriate and confirm any minimum-age condition in the booking details.
The tower climb is physically separate from both tours and the interior ticket. There is no lift, no storage for buggies at the tower entrance and the climb involves spiral and metal stairs. Do not add it automatically for anyone uncomfortable with height, confined stairs or sustained climbing.
Average time to allow
Use the duration shown for your selected guided experience as the fixed part of the plan. Add an arrival margin and avoid placing a separate interior booking immediately at the advertised tour finish, especially when the walk includes a brewery stop.
For an independent interior visit, our planning suggestion is 45–75 minutes. The cathedral recommends 30–45 minutes for the south tower alone. Combining a tour, interior and tower can therefore occupy much of a half-day once checks, entrances and pauses are included.
Winter visiting tips
Both compared tours spend meaningful time outdoors, so wear warm, rain-resistant layers and shoes suited to cobbles. Choose the brighter part of the day where possible, then place any separately booked interior visit after the walk. Keep a little flexibility for poor weather and seasonal crowds.
From November through February, the tower usually closes at 16:00, and it has specific closure days around Carnival and Christmas. Recheck the exact date before adding the climb. An exterior tour and interior ticket remain separate even when winter weather makes an indoor visit more attractive.
