History
Currumbin’s public story began in 1947 around Alex Griffiths’ lorikeet feeding. What started as a small bird-focused attraction developed into a much broader sanctuary.
The site was gifted to the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) in 1976, and its wildlife hospital was founded in 1989. Conservation and animal care remain important context for a visit beyond the opportunity to photograph familiar species.
Why Visit
The sanctuary works well for groups who want an animal-led day rather than continuous thrill rides. Presentations can help explain care and conservation, while a slower route leaves room to notice behaviour between scheduled activities.
It also makes geographic sense with the southern Gold Coast. Give it a generous block of time instead of trying to combine it with a northern theme park on the same short day.
Tickets & Entry Options
Choose a date and age category for ordinary sanctuary admission, then check whether any additional activity is actually named on your confirmation. Animal encounters, the adventure course and the night trail have different access rules. A koala photograph does not establish an included holding session.
| Option | Includes | Know before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Sanctuary day entry (opens in a new tab) | General sanctuary admission, listed shows and Lost Valley access under its operating conditions. | Animal encounters and experiences cost extra; no Astra Lumina, Treetop Challenge or transport unless separately selected. |
Ticket Price
Check the final Ticketory total for the visit you intend to make. Compare general admission with any encounter or adventure combination only after checking the activity’s age, height and scheduling rules.
Official guidance says the public lorikeet feeding is free to watch or join, with donations welcome. That does not provide access to the whole sanctuary; conversely, do not buy full admission solely because you assumed the outside feeding requires it.
Opening Hours
Current official visitor information lists 09:00–16:00 daily, last admission 15:30, closed 25 April and 25 December. This takes precedence over older broad 08:00–17:00 descriptions.
Lorikeet feeding is listed at 08:00 and 16:00 outside the main entry arrangement. Individual habitats, presentations and night experiences operate their own schedules; check them independently on your date.
How to Get There
The sanctuary entrance is on Tomewin Street in Currumbin. Use the current bus planner or arrange a taxi, transfer or drive from your accommodation; central Surfers Paradise is a separate journey.
Parking is not automatically part of the entry ticket. If someone needs accessible parking or a drop-off, confirm the route in advance rather than assuming every internal path has the same gradient.
Highlights
Choose native-animal habitats, keeper presentations and Lost Valley according to the day’s map and operating notices. Wildlife visibility varies, and hospital viewing does not equal a private clinical tour or guaranteed access to treatment areas.
Tips
Wear walking shoes, carry water and follow animal-feeding instructions. Do not bring your own food for wildlife or approach an animal because a promotional photograph shows close contact.
Check show times when you arrive and keep a meal break in the plan. Lost Valley has sloped approaches and specific stroller limitations, so ask staff for a route suited to your group.
Average Time
Our planning allowance is four to five hours for habitats, a few presentations and breaks. A shorter visit is possible with clear priorities, but arriving near last admission does not leave time to experience the sanctuary comprehensively.
Winter Tips
Gold Coast winter is June–August. Days can be comfortable, while early feeding and late outdoor viewing feel cooler. Bring layers and a waterproof jacket; light rain may not close the sanctuary, but severe weather can affect activities and operations.
