History
The Getty Center opened in 1997, bringing a major museum and other Getty activities to a hilltop campus in Brentwood. Richard Meier’s architecture gives the complex a distinctive arrangement of stone, light and open spaces.
Artist Robert Irwin created the Central Garden as a work of art within that setting. The campus continues to develop, with present-day improvements and renovations affecting which parts visitors can explore.
Why Visit
Choose the Getty if you enjoy moving between close looking at art and a broader architectural landscape. The outdoor spaces provide a useful change of pace between galleries.
A guide can help you make a selective route through a large campus. Independent visiting also works well if you prefer your own pace and have arranged the required free reservation.
Tickets & Entry Options
The linked guided product lists Getty Center access, a guide and the tram ride. Parking and tips are excluded. Confirm the guide’s meeting location and how the admission reservation is handled.
Ordinary admission and the tram are not premium benefits that require buying a private tour. The paid element is the guided service. Do not assume the tour restores access to galleries closed for renovation.
| Option | Includes | Know before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Getty Center guided tour (opens in a new tab) | Guided visit, campus access and tram ride as listed | Public admission is free; parking and tips excluded; gallery closures apply |
Ticket Price
Getty Center admission is free, with a timed-entry reservation required. No current guided-tour price is quoted here; compare the final Ticketory total, group format, duration and cancellation terms.
Parking is paid separately. The current official page lists $25 standard parking, with lower late-day rates and free Saturday parking after 18:00. Check the conditions for your arrival time rather than assuming a tour includes the garage.
Opening Hours
Current hours are Tuesday–Friday and Sunday 10:00–18:30, Saturday 10:00–21:00, and Monday closed. Annual holiday closures include New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
South Pavilion, East Pavilion plaza-level galleries and North Pavilion galleries are currently listed as closed for renovations. Check the updated map and exhibition information before choosing artworks as must-see stops.
How to Get There
The address is 1200 Getty Center Drive. Plan the approach to the arrival area, then allow time for the tram and the walk to your guide’s meeting point.
Traffic on the surrounding roads can change the journey considerably. Use current transport guidance and avoid treating arrival at the garage as the start of the gallery visit. The Getty Villa is a different museum at another address.
Highlights
Give the architecture, terraces and Central Garden time alongside the galleries that are open. Looking at how the buildings frame the landscape can be as rewarding as trying to cover another room.
Use the day’s map for current displays and routes. A familiar artwork may be on loan or behind a closed gallery, so build the visit around a few interests rather than an inflexible list of individual objects.
Tips
Reserve the appropriate entry or confirm the tour’s arrangement before travelling. Keep your guide’s contact and meeting details saved, and bring shoes comfortable for a campus with indoor and outdoor walking.
Follow photography rules and respect artworks and garden planting. If step-free routes or other accommodations matter, discuss the current route with the provider ahead of time, particularly during renovation work.
Average Time
Allow three to four hours for a guided introduction and independent time, with longer for keen art visitors. The guided portion has its own advertised length; this allowance also includes pauses and exploring afterwards.
Add transport and tram time separately. A relaxed afternoon can work better than squeezing the Getty between two distant Los Angeles appointments.
Winter Tips
Winter can bring cool air and rain to the hilltop. Wear layers and keep the gardens and terraces flexible if weather is poor, while making use of the open indoor galleries.
Check holiday closures and renovation notices shortly before the visit. Earlier sunset can change the outdoor part of a late-day plan even when the museum remains open.
