History: Herculaneum before and after Vesuvius

Ancient Herculaneum stood above the sea, with Vesuvius behind it. It became a Roman municipality after its conquest in 89 BC. The eruption of AD 79 buried the town.

Volcanic material preserved parts of buildings and organic objects in remarkable detail. Today’s excavated area is only part of the ancient settlement, with more remaining beneath modern Ercolano.

Why visit Herculaneum rather than only Pompeii?

The smaller visible area can make Herculaneum easier to approach as a focused visit. We suggest choosing it when you want time to look closely rather than spend much of the day covering distance.

It also rewards a second archaeological day after Pompeii: compare the arrangement of houses and streets instead of asking which site is universally “better”. Choose according to your time, interests and tolerance for outdoor walking.

Entry tickets versus a live guide

The checked Ticketory entry product includes admission to the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum. It excludes a live guide, transport, food and drinks. Security checks still apply even when a product refers to skipping the ticket line.

The venue page also offers guided visits in several languages. Pick the language and guide type in the actual option you buy, then read the meeting instructions. A general description of tours on the venue page does not add a guide to a standalone ticket.

Does Herculaneum entry include a guide?

The checked entry ticket does not include a guide, transport or food. Choose a guided option if you want someone to interpret the site as you walk.

Can I skip security with a Herculaneum ticket?

No. A ticket-queue benefit does not remove security checks. Allow time for entry formalities before any tightly scheduled activity afterwards.

Ticket price: check the category and extras

Compare the final price for admission alone with the total for a guided experience. Confirm the documents needed for any reduced category and read cancellation terms before payment.

If you are arranging your own travel, include return transport in your budget. Paying more for a guided visit is a choice about interpretation and structure; it should not be confused with a transport service unless that is expressly included.

Opening hours and areas currently closed

From 16 March to 14 October, the park lists 08:30–19:30, last entry 18:00; the archaeological area must be vacated by 19:00. From 15 October to 15 March, it lists 08:30–17:00, last entry 15:30, with the archaeological area cleared by 16:40.

The current visitor page lists the Villa of the Papyri and ancient theatre as closed for works without confirmed reopening dates. Do not buy an ordinary entry ticket expecting those special areas to be accessible.

Getting there: Ercolano Scavi

The park directs rail visitors to Ercolano Scavi on the Circumvesuviana route from Naples, followed by a walk to Corso Resina 187. It also identifies access at Via dei Papiri Ercolanesi 19.

Use the entrance or meeting point named on your booking. Save it before leaving Naples and allow time to orient yourself after the train; do not assume an address categorised under “Naples” is in the city centre.

Look for the structure of daily life

The street grid, residential blocks and commercial spaces help reveal how the town worked. The park describes baths, richly decorated residences and public areas alongside the domestic quarters.

Try following one question during your visit: where did people work, receive visitors or spend time together? That gives ordinary-looking doorways and rooms a purpose beyond their appearance in photographs.

Practical tips for an unhurried visit

Keep the issued ticket available throughout your visit. Our advice is to wear shoes that feel secure on uneven ground and use a small day bag rather than carrying your travel luggage into the outing.

Read room signs and respect barriers even when another visitor steps beyond them. If you need a step-free route, confirm it in advance with the park and your tour provider; a compact site can still include difficult surfaces.

How long should you stay?

We suggest two to three hours on site for a first independent visit. Use the duration on the selected product for a guided tour, and add time for arrival and the return journey separately.

For a less tiring itinerary, combine Herculaneum with a flexible Naples afternoon rather than another fixed entry immediately afterwards. You can then stay with an interesting building instead of watching the clock.

Winter tips: use the morning

Our winter recommendation is to arrive with enough daylight for the full route, then keep the return afternoon flexible. The earlier closing period makes a late lunch before entry a less forgiving plan.

Bring a light waterproof layer and check conditions before leaving. A museum day in Naples can be a useful alternative when an outdoor visit no longer suits the weather or your group.
