A short history of the Residence

The palace grew from the Neuveste, a castle founded in 1385 at the edge of medieval Munich. From 1508 until 1918, it served as both the home and seat of government of Bavaria’s dukes, electors and kings. Successive Wittelsbach rulers extended the complex, leaving interiors shaped by different periods and ambitions.

The Residence became a public museum in 1920. Much of the complex was destroyed during the Second World War, with reconstruction beginning in 1945. Today’s visit therefore brings together the history of the court, surviving collections and the substantial work of rebuilding a damaged palace.

Why visit the Munich Residence?

This is especially rewarding if you like seeing art in the setting for which it was made. Furniture, paintings and room decoration work together, and a guide can help explain the political messages behind the splendour. Look beyond the quantity of gold: ask who was admitted to a room and what impression its owner wanted to create.

Our suggestion is to make the museum the main indoor activity of a morning or afternoon. It can be a thoughtful introduction to Munich for first-time visitors, but a long sequence of interiors can become tiring. Choose a few details to follow through the rooms, such as ceiling decoration or changing furniture styles, instead of trying to remember every name.

Tickets and entry options

The guided Ticketory option lists priority entry, a live guide and a small-group tour. Treasury and Cuvilliés Theatre tickets are explicitly excluded. Check the departure language, meeting place and duration for your selected date before buying. Priority entry does not remove the need to follow check-in or security instructions.

The museum-and-serenade option lists Residence Museum admission and a candlelight concert; food and drink are excluded. Treat the museum visit and performance as separate parts of your day. Confirm the concert venue, start time and museum-entry arrangements on the booking details. Do not assume that either option includes every attraction in the palace complex.

Ticket prices and what to compare

Checked on 13 October 2026, official 2026 admission is €10 for the Residence Museum or €10 for the Treasury; the two together cost €15. Cuvilliés Theatre admission is €5, while the three-attraction combination is €20. Reduced rates are listed separately and require proof of eligibility. These are standard admission references, not prices for the Ticketory packages above.

Compare the final package total for your date and party size. A guided visit adds a service, while the concert option adds a performance, so the headline amounts are not directly comparable with museum-only entry. Avoid buying duplicate museum admission for a package that already includes it, and read the seller’s cancellation conditions before paying.

Opening hours

The official museum and Treasury schedule checked on 13 October 2026 is 09:00–18:00 from 28 March to 25 October, with last entry at 17:00; from 26 October to 27 March it is 10:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:00. Annual closures listed are 1 January, Shrove Tuesday and 24, 25 and 31 December. Recheck the calendar for your travel date.

A guided tour has its own meeting time, and a concert has a separate performance schedule. Neither should be inferred from museum hours. The Cuvilliés Theatre also has a different timetable. If you add it independently, check its opening window before deciding the order of your visit.

How to get there

The Residence is in central Munich. Nearby public-transport stops include Marienplatz for S-Bahn and U-Bahn, Odeonsplatz for U-Bahn and buses, and Nationaltheater for trams. Use the current journey planner from your starting point and follow your booking’s meeting instructions for the final approach.

The palace has no visitor car park of its own; paid parking is available beneath the Nationaltheater at Max-Joseph-Platz. Our advice is to use public transport when practical and leave time to identify the correct entrance. A large palace complex can have several destinations with similar names, so a street address alone is not a substitute for your tour’s meeting point.

Highlights to look for

The Antiquarium is a natural focal point. Built in 1568–1571 for Duke Albrecht V’s ancient sculpture collection, the 66-metre hall was later transformed for festivities and banquets. Look at the rhythm of the vault, the sculpture along the walls and the painted views of Bavarian towns and palaces.

Elsewhere, compare the character of the ceremonial interiors rather than expecting one consistent style. The Ancestral Gallery, Ornate Rooms and royal apartments offer different ways to think about display and status. Follow the day’s available route and your guide’s choices; do not assume every room is guaranteed on every tour.

Practical tips

Large bags from 35 × 30 × 12 cm, rucksacks and bulky items cannot be carried through the Residence; use the free supervised cloakroom. Personal photography is permitted without flash or tripod. Food and drink are restricted, with an exception for water in plastic bottles up to 0.5 litres. Plan your meal outside the museum.

Personal prams and buggies cannot enter the exhibition rooms; loan buggies are available. For mobility needs, contact the venue before travelling: staff assist with lift access, but the Treasury and Nibelungen Halls are not barrier-free. The current accessibility notice also reports building work affecting the museum’s accessible toilet, so confirm arrangements directly.

Keep your ticket and meeting details available offline. If you choose a live tour, ask about its pace and accessible route before booking rather than assuming the general museum arrangements also apply to that particular group.

Average time to allow

The official accessibility guidance recommends two to three hours for the Residence Museum. Use that as a museum planning allowance, not a promise about the length of a particular guided product. Check your chosen tour’s duration and add time for arrival and the cloakroom.

A concert requires additional time, including any gap between museum closing and the performance. Leave the intervening period flexible for a meal. If you also want the Treasury or theatre, add those as separate decisions rather than compressing everything into a short museum slot.

Winter visiting tips

The shorter winter day makes an early museum start useful. Our suggestion is to place any outdoor city walk in the brighter weather window and keep the palace visit as your main indoor activity. Wear layers you can carry comfortably and allow extra travel time in poor weather.

Check holiday closures before building a festive itinerary around the Residence. For a museum-and-concert day, plan the gap between the two and confirm where you need to return. A relaxed meal is usually a better use of that interval than another tightly timed reservation across the city.

Munich Residence ticket questions

Is Munich Residence free, and which admission prices apply?

The guide’s official 2026 references, checked on 13 October 2026, are €10 each for the Museum or Treasury, €15 for both, €5 for Cuvilliés Theatre and €20 for all three. These are standard paid admission rates, separate from guided or concert packages. Reduced rates require eligibility proof; check your category before paying.

What is included in the guided tour and concert options?

The guided museum option lists priority entry, a live guide and a small-group tour, excluding the Treasury and Cuvilliés Theatre. Priority entry still requires following check-in and security instructions. The museum-and-serenade option includes museum admission and a candlelight concert, excluding food and drink. Confirm separate museum and performance arrangements; neither option should be assumed to cover the entire complex.

Which winter opening hours and closure dates should I check?

The schedule checked on 13 October 2026 lists 10:00–17:00 from 26 October to 27 March, with last entry at 16:00. Listed annual closures are 1 January, Shrove Tuesday, and 24, 25 and 31 December. Recheck your date; guided departures, concerts and Cuvilliés Theatre follow separate schedules.

Practical details can change. Check your selected Ticketory booking for current prices, opening arrangements, accessibility and entry instructions. Suggested timings and routes are our planning advice, not a guaranteed schedule.
