History
The New England Aquarium opened on Central Wharf in June 1969. Its approach brought public exhibits together with education and a growing commitment to ocean conservation, giving Boston’s waterfront a new kind of destination.
The Giant Ocean Tank became a defining feature early in the aquarium’s history. The institution has continued developing its exhibits, research and animal-care work, so a visit can connect individual animals with wider questions about ocean life.
Why Visit
Visit for the chance to slow down and notice how different animals move, feed and use their habitats. The central tank rewards looking from several positions rather than taking a single photograph and moving on.
The aquarium suits families as well as adults with an interest in marine life. Pick a few priorities, leave time to watch a scheduled presentation if available and keep the rest of the day’s waterfront plans flexible.
Tickets & Entry Options
The linked admission product includes aquarium entry and feature exhibitions. A Simons Theatre film can be added during checkout; it should not be assumed to come with the base ticket. Whale Watch Tours and Animal Encounters are excluded.
Choose the date and passenger categories carefully and check the final voucher instructions. A whale-watching boat may depart nearby, but its ticket is a different purchase and does not automatically cover an aquarium visit.

Opening Hours
Current fall hours are 09:00–17:00 Monday–Friday and 09:00–18:00 on weekends. Check the actual date for holiday or seasonal changes, and use the admission time shown on your booking.
The Atlantic harbor-seal habitat is currently being improved and those animals are temporarily off exhibit. Presentation times also change; confirm the day’s programme after arrival instead of building the visit around an assumed feeding time.
How to Get There
The aquarium is at 1 Central Wharf on Boston’s downtown waterfront. The nearby Aquarium station on the MBTA Blue Line is a practical approach, with the final walk leading toward the harbour.
Parking garages and transport tickets are separate costs. Allow time for the approach, ticket checks and any queue. If combining a cruise, confirm its exact wharf and boarding time rather than treating every waterfront departure as the same location.
Highlights
Spend time at the Giant Ocean Tank from different levels, then choose other habitats that interest your group. Seeing the same environment from more than one angle can reveal animals you missed on the first circuit.
Look at the day’s map and presentation schedule before setting your route. Animal visibility and exhibit access vary; the temporary harbor-seal notice is a reminder that a living collection does not operate as a fixed checklist.
Tips
Reserve a suitable entry time, travel with a manageable bag and allow children time to watch rather than hurrying from display to display. Follow staff instructions at any touch experience.
A film needs its own scheduled slot and extra time. Before adding an Animal Encounter, check age, mobility and other participation rules separately; ordinary admission does not imply eligibility or availability for an encounter.
Average Time
Allow two to three hours for an unhurried aquarium visit. A focused visit can be shorter, while a film, presentations or a family break can extend it.
Leave travel time between the aquarium and a boat departure. If you have an afternoon sailing, visit the aquarium early enough that the last gallery does not become a race to another queue.
Winter Tips
The aquarium is a practical indoor focus on a cold Boston day. The harbour approach can still be windy, so bring warm layers for the walk and any outdoor waiting.
Recheck seasonal and holiday hours, and keep a long Harborwalk stroll optional when weather is poor. Whale watching is a separate seasonal activity; an aquarium ticket is not a winter sailing promise.
New England Aquarium ticket questions
Is a Simons Theatre film included with aquarium admission?
The compared base product includes aquarium entry and feature exhibitions. A Simons Theatre film is an optional checkout add-on, so confirm it is selected if you want one. Give the film its own scheduled slot and extra time rather than squeezing it into the same aquarium-only allowance.
Does a New England Aquarium ticket include whale watching?
No. Whale Watch Tours and Animal Encounters are excluded from the compared aquarium admission product. A boat departing nearby is still a separate experience, with its own ticket, wharf and boarding instructions. Confirm both bookings and leave travel time between the aquarium and a sailing.
How long should I allow at the New England Aquarium?
Our suggestion is two to three hours for an unhurried aquarium visit, plus any film, arrival and onward travel. Start with the Giant Ocean Tank from different levels, then choose other habitats. Presentations and family breaks can extend the visit, so keep the next waterfront activity flexible.
