History: a palace rebuilt after fire

After a fire destroyed the old Alcázar in 1734, Philip V commissioned its replacement. Construction began in 1738, and Charles III was the first monarch to live in the new palace.

The building remains an official royal residence, although the royal family does not live here. For visitors, its rooms reveal how architecture and decoration were used to stage court life.

Why visit the Royal Palace?

Choose the palace if you enjoy rooms as complete compositions: ceiling paintings, furniture, textiles and the sequence from one space to another. You do not need to recognise every monarch to find that experience rewarding.

For a balanced Madrid trip, pair it with a different kind of visit on another half-day. The Prado focuses your attention on paintings; Reina Sofía introduces modern and contemporary art. Avoid treating three substantial visits as a single checklist.

Tickets: entry, audio, guided or combined?

The checked Ticketory entry option is self-guided and excludes a live guide, transport and meals. Its skip-the-line wording concerns the ticket queue; security checks remain compulsory.

For a live tour, check the selected language, meeting point and duration. Audio commentary is a different service and should be explicitly included in your chosen option.

The palace-and-gallery combination names both venues and excludes an audioguide. Its selected time is for the palace; read the voucher for the gallery validity period. Royal Kitchen access also needs an option that specifically includes it.

Does a Royal Palace ticket include the Royal Kitchen?

Do not assume so. Choose an option that explicitly includes the Royal Kitchen; the ordinary palace route and the Kitchen visit are different experiences.

Is the Royal Collections Gallery included with palace entry?

Only when the selected ticket names both venues. Check the palace appointment and gallery validity separately; the checked combination excludes an audioguide.

Ticket price: compare what you will use

Check the total for your date and participants on Ticketory. Compare entry-only with the cost of the guide or additional venue you actually want; a larger package is not automatically better for a short stay.

Reduced and free-admission categories have eligibility requirements. Check these before paying, and carry supporting identification if you use a concession.

Opening hours and official-event closures

The published schedule is Monday–Saturday 10:00–19:00 from April to September, and 10:00–18:00 from October to March. Sunday opening is 10:00–16:00. Admission ends one hour before closing.

Official events can cause additional closures. Check the calendar for your exact date and follow the time on your ticket instead of assuming that a general opening schedule guarantees entry.

How to get there and find the entrance

Ópera metro station serves the palace area. The current visitor entrance is through the Almudena Cathedral esplanade / Plaza de la Armería. A guided-tour meeting point may be elsewhere; follow the voucher first.

Build in time between reaching the neighbourhood and checking in. A map pin for the building is not necessarily a pin for your guide or the correct queue.

Highlights to look for

Look for the Main Staircase, Throne Hall and richly decorated Gasparini Room along the permitted route. The building is much larger than the visitor circuit; a ticket is not access to every room.

Our suggestion is to compare two contrasting rooms rather than photograph every doorway. Notice how the decoration changes with each room’s purpose, then take time outside to appreciate the palace’s scale.

Practical tips before you arrive

Save the ticket and any meeting instructions before leaving your accommodation. Keep the booking time, entrance and tour language together so that everyone in your group follows the same plan.

Travel light, wear comfortable shoes and follow staff instructions about photography and temporarily restricted rooms. Check accessibility arrangements before booking if stairs or long periods standing affect your visit.

How much time should you allow?

Our planning suggestion is 1½–2 hours for a relaxed palace visit including arrival and security. A guided experience has its own advertised duration.

Allow a separate block for the Royal Collections Gallery or Kitchen. Leave an unbooked break after the palace rather than scheduling a distant timed attraction immediately afterwards.

Winter tips

Choose an earlier slot if you also want to enjoy the surrounding squares in daylight. A mainly indoor visit still involves getting to the entrance and possibly waiting outside.

Bring a layer for that part of the day, and check holiday exceptions before fixing your itinerary. The shorter winter schedule makes a late arrival less forgiving.
