History
Founded in 1838, ARTIS developed from a zoological society into a long-established part of the city’s cultural and scientific landscape. The wider site now includes distinct institutions with different themes. That development matters when booking: the zoo, Micropia and Groote Museum are not interchangeable names for the same admission.
Why Visit
Choose the zoo for a slower day of walking and observing nature within the city. Do not build the entire visit around one animal or a guaranteed presentation, since visibility and daily operation vary. Micropia adds a different scale of investigation, focusing on microbes rather than simply extending the zoo route with more enclosures.
Tickets & Entry Options
The zoo-entry option lists ARTIS admission and the Planetarium. The second option adds ARTIS-Micropia. For that combined option, the booked time applies to Micropia; zoo admission is valid on the same day without a separate zoo slot according to the product instructions. Groote Museum admission is excluded from both options shown here.
| Option | Includes | Know before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Zoo admission (opens in a new tab) | ARTIS Zoo and Planetarium. | No automatic Micropia or Groote Museum admission; food and transport separate. |
| Zoo and Micropia (opens in a new tab) | ARTIS Zoo, Planetarium and Micropia. | Booked slot is for Micropia; zoo same day. Groote Museum excluded. |
Ticket Price
Compare the complete live total for your group and the admissions you will actually use. A combined ticket can suit a broad science-and-nature day, but adds less value if you only have time for the zoo. Food, personal purchases and parking are separate considerations. Check category eligibility and the reservation’s cancellation conditions before paying.
Opening Hours
The current zoo timetable lists daily 09:00–18:00. Micropia currently lists 10:00–17:00. Winter and holiday arrangements need a date check: the zoo’s holiday schedule includes 09:00–17:00 on 24–26 December, 09:00–16:00 on 31 December and 10:00–17:00 on 1 January. Follow the confirmed Micropia slot if buying the combination.
How to Get There
The address is Plantage Kerklaan 38–40. Plan a public-transport route to the Plantage area, then walk to the zoo entrance; check current stops rather than relying on a permanent tram-number assumption. Leave time for both entry and orientation. A city sightseeing ticket or another nearby attraction is not automatically included in this booking.
Highlights
Choose several habitat areas and use the site map to avoid repeatedly crossing the grounds. Check the Planetarium programme early. With the Micropia combination, plan the zoo route around that fixed visit rather than arriving at the museum after its booked slot. Daily talks and other activities follow the current programme.
Tips
Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry weather protection. Ask about wheelchair routes or equipment before starting; the operator describes most of the site as accessible, but that does not make every path or viewing position identical. Large luggage is restricted. Respect the smoke-free rules and do not feed animals or cross barriers.
Average Time
Three to four hours is a useful editorial allowance for a selective zoo visit, with additional time for Micropia, meals or a slow family pace. It is not a fixed limit attached to admission. Trying to fit both institutions into a short gap can mean rushing the grounds or missing the museum session.
Winter Tips
Expect a mix of outdoor paths and indoor shelter. Bring waterproof footwear, layers and gloves for a long winter walk; use available indoor spaces for breaks without assuming all habitats are covered. Check the date’s closing time and Micropia session. Start early if you want to see the grounds in daylight.
