History

The museum traces its origins to Herman Heijenbrock’s Labour Museum, founded in 1923. Its present Oosterdok home opened in 1997 as NewMetropolis before the later NEMO name. Renzo Piano designed the striking building above the IJtunnel, using its curved form to respond to the structure beneath it.

Why Visit

It works best for visitors who enjoy learning through interaction instead of only reading labels. Different ages may want different experiments, so agree a meeting point and a few priorities. Adults can enjoy the explanations too. If your main goal is simply the rooftop view, distinguish that from paying for the indoor science-museum experience.

Tickets & Entry Options

The entry option below lists museum admission, the chain-reaction demonstration, a laboratory for experiments and free lockers. Check the day’s programme for demonstration and lab arrangements; these are not promises of an individual private session. No canal cruise is included in this admission-only option, even though other bundles may appear alongside it.

Ticket Price

Use the live Ticketory price for the correct date and ages, and compare any eligibility or museum-card arrangements separately. A free or discounted category can still require its own timed reservation. Budget for food and personal purchases rather than assuming they come with entry. Read the selected booking’s change and cancellation conditions before confirming.

Opening Hours

The usual museum schedule is Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–17:30, with additional Mondays during specified holiday periods. The current list includes 26 October, 2 November, and 21 and 28 December 2026. Check the calendar for your exact day and arrival session; a general Monday rule should not override those specific openings.

How to Get There

The address is Oosterdok 2, 1011 VX Amsterdam. Amsterdam Centraal provides a practical starting point for a waterfront walk; use a map for the pedestrian approach and leave time for crossings and the entrance. Wet or windy weather can make the walk slower. Museum admission does not include a transfer from your accommodation.

Highlights

Give an experiment enough time to see what changes when you alter one thing. Check when the chain-reaction demonstration runs and work the rest of your route around it. The building itself is also worth noticing: the exhibition-focused interior contrasts with the recognisable exterior. Rooftop access follows its own conditions and weather.

Tips

Keep the timed booking ready and choose a manageable route for the ages in your party. Ask staff about current lab participation and accessibility arrangements. Busy hands-on stations may require patience; returning later can be better than waiting at every one. Use lockers as directed and keep food away from experiments and exhibition equipment.

Average Time

Two to three hours is a reasonable starting allowance for a selective visit, and enthusiastic families may want longer. Add arrival and any meal separately. This is a planning estimate rather than a fixed ticket duration. A short late-afternoon slot gives less scope for demonstrations and repeated experiments than an earlier visit.

Winter Tips

The indoor exhibitions are useful in bad weather, but Oosterdok and the rooftop are exposed to wind and rain. Bring a warm waterproof layer for the approach and treat the roof as an optional extra when conditions suit. Check special Monday and holiday openings, and allow time to dry off before using interactive equipment.
