History
The Field Museum emerged from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and developed into a major natural-history research institution. Its collections support scientific study as well as the galleries visitors see.
The museum moved to its present lakefront building in 1921. SUE, the famous Tyrannosaurus rex, was unveiled at the museum in 2000 and moved to a dedicated space in the Evolving Planet galleries in 2018.
Why Visit
Visit if you enjoy connecting individual specimens with much larger stories about life, environments and people. The museum rewards a focused route, especially when travelling with children whose attention may vary between subjects.
Give a favourite gallery time rather than trying to cover every floor. Pairing a dinosaur interest with a very different collection can make the visit more balanced and memorable.
Tickets & Entry Options
The reviewed basic-admission ticket includes museum entry and permanent exhibitions. It excludes special exhibitions and the 3D film. Do not assume a temporary show is included because its poster appears on the museum website.
The museum currently advertises additional experiences including Pokémon Fossil Museum and After the Age of Dinosaurs. Check their separate ticket requirements, dates and availability directly within your chosen purchase before planning around them.

Ticket Price
The museum’s current reference page lists guest admission starting at $30, with different Chicago and Illinois arrangements. Eligibility, proof requirements and special-experience upgrades matter, so compare the category that applies to your party.
No current Ticketory total is quoted here. Check the chosen date, passenger ages, fees and exhibition inclusions before payment. A basic ticket and an all-access product should not be compared solely on their names.
Opening Hours
Normal published hours are daily 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:00. Thanksgiving and Christmas Day are closed. Selected Legendary Late Hours dates extend the day, but they are not the regular daily schedule.
A late-afternoon arrival leaves limited time in a large museum. Verify the actual date and any separate exhibition time before building the rest of your Museum Campus itinerary.
How to Get There
The museum is at 1400 South DuSable Lake Shore Drive on Museum Campus. Roosevelt station serves the Red, Orange and Green lines; the museum identifies the #146 bus connection at State and Roosevelt. Metra Electric’s Museum Campus/11th Street station is another approach.
Distances on the campus can feel longer in wind or rain. Leave time for the final approach and avoid treating a transfer from another nearby museum as instantaneous. Parking and any local transport are separate costs.
Highlights
Make the dinosaur galleries and the museum’s wider natural-history displays part of a deliberate route. The scale of the main hall is a useful orientation point before you head into more detailed exhibitions.
Look beyond the largest skeletons: smaller specimens can explain scientific processes with surprising clarity. Displays and temporary closures change, so use the day’s floor map instead of assuming every room or object is available.
Tips
Choose two or three priorities before arriving, then take a break between them. Keep a photograph of the floor map and agree where your group will regroup.
Check bag, food and photography rules before travel. If you need an accessible entrance, wheelchair arrangements or sensory support, review the museum’s current guidance ahead of time rather than relying on a generic admission description.
Average Time
Allow three to four hours for a substantial first visit. A full day can be worthwhile for keen museum visitors, particularly if a separately booked exhibition or film is included in their plan.
Two hours calls for a selective route. Give yourself permission to leave some galleries for another visit instead of turning the afternoon into a rushed sequence of rooms.
Winter Tips
The museum is a strong indoor anchor in winter, but the lakefront approach can be cold and exposed. Plan a practical arrival route and carry layers you can comfortably manage indoors.
Check holiday closures and the forecast before combining the museum with a long shoreline walk. An indoor break nearby may be more useful than an ambitious outdoor transfer during snow or strong wind.
