History
Completed in 1973 as Sears Tower, Willis Tower grew from the retailer’s need for a large headquarters. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the building, with engineer Fazlur Khan’s bundled-tube structure helping manage the demands of height and wind.
The tower took the Willis name in 2009. Its skyline presence remains familiar to generations of Chicagoans, while the current Skydeck combines observation spaces with a museum-style introduction to the city.
Why Visit
Visit for the sense of height above the Loop and the chance to step onto The Ledge if you are comfortable doing so. The view connects the river, dense downtown streets and lake in a single panorama.
The attraction suits architecture interests as well as a memorable family photograph. Visitors uneasy with heights can enjoy the regular observation areas without making the glass-floor experience the measure of a successful visit.
Tickets & Entry Options
The reviewed off-peak ticket includes Skydeck admission, the elevator journey, The Ledge, exhibits and the theatre presentation. Fast-Pass admission is explicitly excluded.
Choose an available off-peak time that suits your day. A standard ticket can include The Ledge while still requiring a wait; do not treat admission as expedited access. Other products and peak-time slots may have different terms.

Ticket Price
The official reference page checked on 15 October 2026 lists general admission from $32 for ages 12+ and $22 for ages 3–11; children under three are free. These are starting prices and depend on date, time and experience.
Check the selected Ticketory total and any fees before purchase. Compare like-for-like access and time slots, keeping expedited entry and wider attraction bundles separate from ordinary admission.
Opening Hours
For 1 October–28 February, the published schedule is 09:00–20:00, extended to 21:00 on Saturday. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The attraction states that it opens every day, but date-specific changes should still be checked.
Use the confirmed booking time and arrive with the requested margin. A late last-entry slot leaves less flexibility for exhibits, queues and photography than an earlier visit.
How to Get There
Willis Tower is at 233 South Wacker Drive. Skydeck visitors enter on Jackson Boulevard, on the south side of the building. Follow that entrance rather than an office lobby.
Plan the final walk from your CTA, Metra or downtown starting point and check current service. If using a parking garage, allow time to walk around the block to the correct entrance.
Highlights
The Ledge projects beyond the tower and lets you look straight down through the glass. Time there is managed so other visitors can take a turn; follow staff instructions and keep your photo plan simple.
Before going up, give the city exhibits some attention. On the observation floor, look for relationships between landmarks rather than trying to identify every distant building. Visibility across states is possible only in favourable conditions.
Tips
Keep bags small because the operator does not provide storage lockers. Prepare tickets before reaching the scan point and leave room for security and elevator queues.
Skydeck provides accessible routes, including access to The Ledge, and sensory accommodations are described by the operator. Discuss specific needs ahead of travel so the visit does not depend on making arrangements at the busiest point of entry.
Average Time
The operator suggests about 45–60 minutes for the core experience. For planning, reserve one to two hours with a queue margin, especially near sunset or on a busy weekend.
If you are combining the visit with a river cruise, leave sufficient travel time between the tower and the correct dock. Entry and exit times are not interchangeable with the time shown on your reservation.
Winter Tips
An indoor deck can be appealing in winter, but low cloud or snow can remove the distant view. Check current visibility and the conditions attached to changing your booking before choosing a date.
Winter sunset comes earlier, so plan the light you want instead of copying a summer itinerary. Bring warm clothing for the journey and keep a museum or indoor meal as a flexible companion to the visit.
