A short history of Temppeliaukio Church
Architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen designed the church, which was inaugurated on 28 September 1969. The hall was excavated into the existing bedrock and covered with a copper dome. Rather than hiding the site’s geology behind a conventional interior, the design made the exposed rock central to the building’s character.
The project attracted debate in the 1960s over the cost of another church during a period of humanitarian crises, and its accompanying facilities were built smaller than originally planned. The completed building became both a parish place of worship and a notable concert setting. That continuing combination of local religious life, architecture and music explains why sightseeing access must fit around other uses.
Why visit the Rock Church?
This is a good choice when you enjoy understanding a building through its materials. Look at the transition from rugged stone to concrete supports, narrow windows and the curved ceiling. The interest is in how those elements form one space, so take a seat for part of the visit rather than walking straight through with your camera raised.
Our recommendation is to give this stop a calm place in the day. It suits architecture lovers and visitors who want a quieter interval between city walks. With children, ask them to notice where the daylight comes from or compare the textures they can see. If you mainly want a large collection of rooms and exhibits, adjust your expectations: the sanctuary itself is the focus.
Tickets and what they include
Both Ticketory options below provide admission to Temppeliaukio Church and exclude a guided tour. The MegaPass-labelled option describes presenting a mobile ticket at the entrance. Its inclusion list covers this church; the name should not be taken to mean that a wider Helsinki sightseeing pass or other attractions are included.
Both options offer the same church admission. Choose according to the final price, valid date, cancellation terms and redemption instructions. Keep the confirmation ready offline. A concert or an organised guided visit is a separate arrangement, and buying admission does not give access during a ceremony that closes the church to sightseeing.
| Option | Includes | Know before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Church entry ticket (opens in a new tab) | Admission to Temppeliaukio Church | Guided tour excluded; concert admission is not listed. Follow the dated visiting calendar. |
| Church entry via MegaPass (opens in a new tab) | Admission to Temppeliaukio Church with mobile-ticket presentation | Guided tour excluded. No wider city pass or additional attraction is listed as included. |
Admission prices and eligibility
Official admission checked on 14 October 2026 is €8 for visitors aged 18 and over during sightseeing hours. Under-18s enter free. Helsinki Card, Helsinki City Pass and the Finnish Museum Card also cover a visit under the church’s published rules. These are official admission and eligibility references, not a fixed quote for either Ticketory option.
Check eligibility before buying an additional ticket, especially for children or if you already hold one of those cards. Confirm the card’s validity and any instructions that apply to your visit. For a paid booking, compare the final total and payment currency rather than assuming every seller’s headline figure matches the church’s own rate.
Opening hours and the weekly calendar
Choose your visit from the official weekly opening-hours calendar on the church’s homepage. The church publishes exact sightseeing times one week ahead and updates them weekly. Weddings, christenings, funerals and Sunday worship close the building to sightseeing, so check your actual date shortly before travelling.
The entrance closes ten minutes before the published closing time. Our advice is to leave a much larger margin if you want to sit and look around. On Sundays and most public holidays, worship starts at 10:00 and lasts about 90 minutes; that service is for participation, with no sightseeing or photography. Use the calendar to find a separate visitor window.
How to get there
Use the main entrance at Lutherinkatu 3, 00100 Helsinki. Temppeliaukio Church is in Etu-Töölö, at the end of Fredrikinkatu. The church describes the walk from Kamppi shopping centre as about ten minutes. Navigate to the visitor entrance rather than the parish’s different postal address.
For a tram, bus or metro connection, use the current HSL journey planner for your starting point and chosen time. Leave room for the final walk and for finding the entrance. If you are continuing to another part of Helsinki afterwards, check that journey separately rather than making the church visit depend on a very short transfer.
The entrance and main hall are at street level and accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. The gallery is reached only by stairs, with no lift. Contact the church if you need to discuss a particular access requirement; the main sanctuary and the upper gallery have different access arrangements.
Highlights inside the church
Start with the exposed rock walls and the stone behind the altar. MyHelsinki identifies an Ice Age crevice as the altarpiece, bringing a natural feature into the religious space. Notice the irregular surfaces alongside the simpler lines of the pews and fittings; the contrast is more revealing than looking only at the dome.
Look upward at the copper-lined ceiling and the ring of skylights. The city’s description records 180 skylights and 22 kilometres of copper lining. Those details give scale to what you see, but you do not need to count anything: follow how the daylight and supporting beams connect the roof to the surrounding rock.
The building’s acoustics also make it a concert venue. Enjoy any sound already present respectfully, but do not expect a performance with an ordinary entry ticket or test the acoustics by making noise. If music is your main reason for coming, consult the event programme and arrange the relevant concert separately.
Practical tips for a considerate visit
Arrive with a small bag: the church restricts large suitcases and backpacks for security. Sort out luggage before your visitor window and keep your ticket easy to find. Dress respectfully and carry winter layers in a way that leaves the aisles clear when you take a seat.
Keep voices low and give other visitors room to pause. Check current staff instructions before photographing, particularly if activity is taking place in the sanctuary. During worship, do not take pictures or walk around sightseeing. A service is not a free substitute for an architectural visit.
For photographs, spend a moment understanding the light before choosing an angle. Take a few considered pictures, then enjoy the space without a screen. A wide interior view and a closer look at the materials can tell different stories without needing to block a passage or move into a restricted area.
How long should you allow?
Our suggestion is 30–45 minutes inside for an unhurried architectural visit, with additional time for arrival and any waiting. Some visitors will be content with less; others may want to sit longer or study the details. This is a planning estimate, not a timed-tour duration or a promise about queues.
Leave a flexible walk or meal afterwards so you can enjoy the church at your own pace. If your wider journey also includes Barcelona, the Sagrada Família offers a very different scale and architectural language. Its admission, timetable and visit length need their own plan rather than being used as a model for this smaller Helsinki stop.
Winter visiting tips
Our preference in winter is to fit an open church window into a day with a modest outdoor route. The interior offers a sheltered architectural stop, but the approach still needs weather-appropriate footwear and layers. Allow extra walking time if conditions are slippery and keep an easy indoor pause in reserve.
Check the weekly calendar close to departure, especially around Christmas and other holidays when religious use may affect sightseeing. If daylight is important to your photographs, choose a suitable daytime window for your date rather than assuming the church will look like a summer image. Let the forecast determine how much city walking you add afterwards.
Rock Church entry and opening questions
What is included in the Temppeliaukio Church ticket options?
Both listed options cover admission to the church and exclude a guided tour. The MegaPass-labelled option describes mobile-ticket presentation; it does not list a wider Helsinki pass or other attractions. Concerts are separate, and admission does not override a ceremony-related sightseeing closure.
Why should I check the Rock Church’s weekly opening calendar?
Temppeliaukio is a working church, so weddings, funerals, christenings and worship can close it to sightseeing. Exact visitor times are published one week ahead and updated weekly. Select a sightseeing window for your date; attending a service is not a substitute for an architectural visit or photography session.
Can wheelchair users visit the main sanctuary and the gallery?
The entrance and main hall are at street level and accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. The upper gallery is reached only by stairs, with no lift. Plan around the main sanctuary if you need step-free access, and contact the church about any particular requirement before travelling.
