A short history
Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to create the Belvedere as a summer residence. The Upper Palace was completed in 1723, forming the grand upper end of the estate.
After Eugene’s death, Maria Theresa acquired the complex. Its later use for the imperial collections helped establish the Belvedere as an early public museum. Today, the architecture and art are two parts of the same visit rather than separate attractions.
Why visit Upper Belvedere?
Choose this museum if you want a major art collection without giving up the pleasure of exploring a palace. Klimt may be your starting point, but leave room for other periods and artists instead of making the entire visit a queue for one painting.
An independent ticket works well if you like lingering over a few works. A guided visit suits anyone who would rather have a route and explanation prepared for them. With children, choose a small number of pictures to look at together and leave the rest of the day flexible.
Tickets and entry options
These are two different ways to visit the Upper Palace. Select the date, time and any tour language before paying. The gardens are free to enter, so a guided garden walk adds interpretation rather than a separate garden admission charge.
An entry time controls when you enter the museum, not a fixed length of stay. Advance tickets avoid the ticket-office purchase queue, but some waiting at the entrance is still possible. Lower Belvedere and Belvedere 21 require their own admission unless explicitly included in a separate combination ticket.
| Option | Includes | Know before booking |

Ticket price
Use the linked options to see the current price for your date and party. Compare an admission ticket with an admission ticket, and a guided tour with a guided tour: the guide’s service changes what you are paying for.
The museum offers free admission to visitors under 19 and reduced categories for eligible visitors. Check the appropriate ticket and any proof required before buying a standard adult ticket. A paid tour can still have a separate charge even when museum admission is free.
Opening hours
Regular Upper Belvedere hours are 09:00–18:00 daily. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing, but that leaves little time for the collection. Book an earlier slot for a proper visit.
Special schedules can apply, so use the hours for your visit date. The palace and gardens have different closing times; do not assume an evening museum visit leaves time for a garden walk afterwards.
How to get there
Upper Belvedere is at Prinz-Eugen-Straße 27, 1030 Vienna. Tram D stops at Schloss Belvedere. Quartier Belvedere is another nearby transport stop, served by trains and trams 18 and O.
From U1 at Südtiroler Platz / Hauptbahnhof, the museum lists a walk of around 15 minutes. Use the Upper Palace entrance for an independent visit; for a guided tour, follow the meeting instructions on your voucher.
What to look for
Give Klimt’s The Kiss time, then explore beyond it. The collection spans many centuries, with works by artists including Schiele and van Gogh. Treat individual works as part of a changing museum display rather than a guaranteed checklist.
Pause in the Marble Hall and notice the palace interiors as you move between galleries. Afterwards, look back at the façade from the garden to understand how the terraces and architecture work together.
Tips for a smoother visit
Arrive with the correct ticket ready and travel light. The museum has free lockers, but does not store luggage: leave suitcases elsewhere before coming. Wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge.
For a tour, check the start time and meeting point separately from the museum address. For an independent visit, decide which parts of the collection matter most to you and take a break before attention starts to fade. Follow room signs and staff guidance around the artworks.
Average time to allow
Our suggestion is 2–3 hours for the Upper Palace and a relaxed look outside. Add more time if you read most labels or want a longer garden walk. This is a planning allowance, not a limit imposed by an entry ticket.
Avoid booking another timed attraction immediately afterwards. Schönbrunn is a separate journey and a substantial visit of its own; spreading the two palaces over different days makes room for meals and breaks.
Winter visiting tips
From November to February, the main palace gardens publish hours of 07:00–17:30. Plan the garden portion before your museum visit if you have a late afternoon ticket. Garden entry is free, but the palace needs its own ticket.
Make the indoor collection the anchor of a cold-weather day. Wear footwear suited to wet paths and keep the outdoor walk optional if conditions are uncomfortable. Do not build your winter plan around summer garden opening hours.
